Call to Arms

A reply to the Cardiff Athletic Club

by Call to Arms

20 Sept 2007

The Cardiff Athletic Club has replied to the signed request by 32 members for a Special General Meeting (SGM).

In an effort to stop the SGM, they have sent out a letter (pdf 1 . pdf 2). For those members of Call to Arms who would like to send a standard reply, the following is our suggestion.

Dear Sir,

Firstly, we’d like to begin this letter by expressing our deepest regret at the way the management committee has conspired with the board of Cardiff RFC Ltd to move the Cardiff Blues away from Cardiff Arms Park. We believe this is a serious mistake and undermines members’ trust in the board. It further resolves our demand for a Special General Meeting.

As a members’ organisation, the Cardiff Athletic Club Management Committee has a responsibility to represent the views of its members. We believe the committee is now failing in this responsibility. As the majority of members are from the rugby section, we believe that these members should have a greater say in how the Management Committee of CAC behaves.

Following your comments on the question of 1996 (now, more than 10 years out of date) the most important thing for members was to “secure first class rugby for Cardiff and the long term future of the club”. By allowing the Cardiff Blues to leave Cardiff Arms Park, CAC has clearly failed in this responsibility. We do not consider the premiership as first class rugby. We regard European competition as first class rugby.

CAC has failed to exert influence over the running of Cardiff RFC Ltd., as evidenced by the recent announcement on the move to Leckwith. We believe CAC should be working with other directors and shareholders (both on and off the board) to build partnerships which will ensure the heritage of the club is maintained.

As the major shareholder, we believe CAC should increase its role in the day to day running of the club.

Thank you for an offer of a meeting with myself and the other 31 signatories. However, we would like to reiterate our desire for change within the structure of CAC and its relationship with Cardiff RFC Ltd.

We urge you to announce the date of the Special General Meeting.

Yours faithfully.
